MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION
WHAT IS A MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION?
A manuscript evaluation is a big picture assessment of your novel. I provide a report (typically 7-10 pages) with constructive feedback assessing the main strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript, with some suggestions for how to address issues. I recommend this as the first step of the editing process, once you have completed your first draft but are still open to large structural changes to strengthen your story.
CONSIDERATIONS
As I conduct a manuscript evaluation, I'll consider the following:

Do the first few pages hook the reader's attention?

Is the novel's structure well-paced, with the inciting incident, rising action, climax, etc., where the reader would expect them to be?

Are the characters realistic and three dimensional? Do they each have their own clear, unique voice? Are their motives clear? Is their characterization consistent? Do they have a satisfying arc throughout the story?

Do the main themes and messages come across the way you intended? Are they clear to the reader?

Do the subplots satisfactorily contribute to the main plot? Are there too many subplots? Not enough?

Is there a good balance of dialogue, action, and inner monologue?

Does every chapter, scene, or beat move the plot forward or help the reader better understand the characters?

Is there enough tension and emotional weight?
